The 2 Laws To Help Change Your Thinking

As many of you may know, we are diving into Brian Tracy’s Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life as the next book to study here at Plus 1 Daily. I’m a huge fan of Brian’s. Some of his books such as Eat That Frog and Goals! have become some of my most treasured books in my library. And Change Your Thinking was on my bookshelf for over a year, so it was time to dive in 🙂

The first two chapters of this book frame it so perfectly that everything begins and ends with your thoughts. Garbage in, garbage out. Good things in, good things out. While this is not news to anyone who studies personal development, the big ‘ah ha’ moment for me was when I read what Brian wrote down for the descriptions of these two laws – The Law of Substitution and The Law of Habit.

The Law of Substitution is defined as “Your mind can only hold one thought at a time, positive or negative. You can substitute a positive thought for a negative one at anytime you choose.

Makes sense right? I mean try this example…Think of a childhood memory. A good family vacation or Christmas with loved ones….

BANANA!

What are you thinking about now? A banana? What happened to the childhood memories? You see, our mind can only hold one thought at a time. It’s amazing but such a powerful exercise when you combine it with…

The Law of HabitAny thought or action that you repeat over and over will eventually become a new habit!

(3 chapters into this book, and already a page full of notes….)

WOW!

Imagine…If we focused on filling our minds with good things 24-7. We stopped watching CNN, instead we watched some personal development videos on YouTube. We did’t listen to traffic reports, we sought out some great success podcasts. We didn’t read gossip columns, instead we read ‘Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life’ 😉

We filled our minds consistently with good stuff! Now what happens to our habits? We are forming good thoughts in our mind, all the time. This is a habit that translates into massive change in our businesses and lives.

Crazy huh? We are in complete control of what we feed our minds with. We can’t control the wars. We can’t control the drama. We can’t control our governments. But we can control our thoughts.

  1. Great stuff Jon. Change your negative thought to a positive thought. This is something I need to work on all of the time. And it’s become a habit, but life happens. Then I need to work on it again. 🙂

    1. Thanks Barb. And that’s what I learned from this book. If we do that enough, all the time…We can’t help but be positive. 🙂

    1. Nah, just a mini-book study post. Something I took from the first few chapters. I’ll get through the book and the post a longer review of the whole thing 🙂

  2. Yes we can’t change what happened However we can change how we think of it. We can see it as a terrible detriment or a challenge. As a major setback or as what do I do from here. How can I get inspired to learn from this and be a better person. I really like your negative vs positive. I wrote positive last because I like to leave on a positive note. Thanks Jon for your inspirational, encouraging writing.
